ANGEL FELT WARY. IN the end, his word to Steel had forced him to stay. Honor. As much as he wanted to, he couldn’t walk away. But things were falling apart. More risk. He decided not to call Renata. He knew what to do, and was prepared. Two more tasks and he would be finished. He doubted Steel would make the third rendezvous site. The man had a superb skill set, but he was in a situation that had very limited options for success.

He had taken off all his muddy gear, cleaned and bandaged his forearm, and put on his old man disguise of graying hair, moustache, and eyebrows, along with the western clothing, including the jacket. The Stetson rested on the passenger seat. He sat behind the wheel of the Chevy SS, parked on the side of the road, north of the second rendezvous point.

A silenced Glock also rested on the passenger seat. The other was in his double back holster beneath his western jacket. Driving the car onto the road, he accelerated to the intersection and took a left. The road was wet, muddy. The jungle heat reached in through his open windows. The smell of the marsh intrigued him. Rich with life, yet full of decay. It reminded him of human society.

In the deeper swamp there were big holes dug out by gators to collect water, which became small oases of life to lure in prey. His oasis was Jasmine and Renata; Lucian, Dima, and Steel threatened to tear it apart.

A half-mile ahead of him, two cars were parked on the right side of the road. Four men, two standing beside each car. They all held pistols or machine guns and were watching the jungle.

Two shots sounded to the southeast. Not too far away. A smaller handgun. He called Zeus. No answer. Not surprising if they were in the midst of fleeing dogs, armored drones, and men.

Changing his mind on strategy, he slowed his speed and holstered the Glock on the passenger seat. Risky. But he didn’t know exactly where Zeus and Matt would exit onto the road. And if Zeus was still carrying Matt, they might not be able to help him. Also he didn’t want to get into a protracted shootout with four heavily armed men. They would shoot his car to pieces, and he needed an escape vehicle or he would be in the same situation as Steel.

A long time ago he had bought a smoke device from a cosplay costume store. It ran on glycerin. Just a small vaporizer not much thicker than a fat pen, connected to a tiny air pump, and both connected to a small battery and a switch beneath the dash. The switch wire led to the vaporizer, which was fastened near the radiator beneath the hood.

When he was fifty feet from the closest parked car, the men glanced at him, while still eyeing the forest south of the road. Lucian’s men wore loose shirts, jeans, and boots.

Angel slowed his car to a crawl and hit the vaporizer switch beneath the dash.
